Saturday in the Park McLaren Announces October 2015 Shows

Closing its 3rd successful year and after 15 shows of free concerts, Friends of the AMP (Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in McLaren Park) announce the October lineup of its final two 2015 Saturday in the Park – McLaren afternoon concerts in McLaren Park’s outdoor Jerry Garcia Amphitheater. Saturday in the Park – McLaren’s free family friendly performances showcase talent to appeal to all ages and musical tastes and the last two shows deliver on that promise.

October 10 – The Kid’s’ Festival – A full day of activities for the little ones starting with Charity and the JAMBand at 11am, and continuing all afternoon with the Alphabet Rockers, Magic Dan’s Magic Show, Tree Frog Treks, Bubble adventures with The Excelsior Science Workshop and the Exploratorium’s Skateboard Science Trailer and 2 fun Rope Squirters. This promises to be a day of non-stop fun for kids and adults alike!

October 17 – The Blues Show – our season finale concert presenting: a Tribute to B. B. King with a great lineup featuring multitalented blues man and saxophonist Bobbie “Spider” Webb and The Smooth Blues Band, Blues, and American Roots singer Jan Fanucchi and her band and special guest, Miss Tia Carroll.

This final 2015 show also celebrates 3 anniversaries: the 44th anniversary of the Amphitheater with the annual Saturday in the Park Amphitheater Birthday Party, the 10- year celebration honoring the naming of the Amphitheater after Jerry Garcia, front man for the Grateful Dead Band, and the 40-year anniversary of the 1st SF Blues Festival held at the “McLaren Park” Amphitheater. Come celebrate with us and enjoy a great day of music!

The Mission of the Saturday in the Park – McLaren Concert Series is to promote and foster local talent, present an eclectic range of free live music performances in an outdoor Greek-style stage, and work to revive San Francisco’s legacy of a rich original music scene that produced today’s music legends.

Situated on a sunny hillside meadow and surrounded by tall shade trees, the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater creates an intimate, friendly setting, allowing for the talents of these artists to truly shine. Concert goers can enjoy bringing the family and a picnic lunch, away from the “hustle and bustle,” for a few hours on a Saturday afternoon. “We want to bring people together in special ways and showcase area talent,” said Linda Litehiser of Friends of the Amp.

In-between shows, the Friends of the AMP want you to discover over seven-and a-half miles of serene beauty, hiking, biking and natural trails and spectacular vistas running throughout the 318 acres in San Francisco’s second-largest park.

Saturday in the Park-McLaren is funded by SF Parks Alliance, grants & donations and support from SF Recreation & Parks, & the San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors.

Recipe for JAM: Take a group of musicians marinated in a tasty sauce made of everything from funk to folk, bluegrass to baroque, rock’n’roll to reggae, rap to hip hop, classical to jazz, trance to dance. Throw in a dash of life-lust, a cup of celebration, a generous quart of kid-inspired crazy energy, a sprinkling of good humor, a loving spoonful of mindfulness, and fill in all the cracks with big family love. Stir it all up in a big pot over the village fire and you’ve got the music and experience of Charity and the JAMband.

Come early and bring a picnic! Fun kid activities including face painting, art table, and more begins at 1pm. Snacks and beverages will be for sale.

Come join the family fun in the afternoon McLaren sun!

Saturday Concert Docent Training - Wed., Aug. 14

The success of the upcoming Saturday In The Park concert series you’ve been hearing about hinges on the active participation of our McLaren Park community in several ways. Perhaps the most important are the docents who will provide security monitoring, help with set up and tear down each show, and help with other tasks like greeting park visitors and pointing them in the right direction. These events will simply be impossible to produce without this significant volunteer effort. So join us, won’t you, in helping bring these bright spots of local talent onto the stage for us all to enjoy!

If you can help with crowd monitoring and related tasks, we especially need your help, and you need to join us at a training meeting sponsored by SF SAFE, Friends of the AMP, SFPD, RPD Park Rangers, and others. The meeting is at Ingleside Police Station from 7-8pm, Wednesday, August 14. For more information about volunteering, contact Linda Litehiser at 585 8005.
